'Washington as dangerous as Brussels'
Good article from John Laughland on Anglo-US relations and why we should consider Washington as much a threat to our national interests as Brussels. http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/3158

Not sure why you think it is such a good article... unless you are decidedly well left of centre... which you are, so I guess that explains it. Our government, as some of the comments highlight, is the biggest threat to our existence. They are supposed to be there to represent us, protect us and promote us, whereas they do little to protect us, nothing to promote us and most definitely are not the sligh-*test*-('") bit interested in representing us. They do, however, seem hell-bent on displacing and replacing us.

I think the reference to 'Washington' is not an explicit call to anti-Americanism but a sign that he is attacking the regime currently resident in the US, rather than the place itself. The same applies to 'Brussels': you can be pro-European without being pro-EU!

I have nothing against Washington, I quite like the place. In fact I will be there in just over two weeks time. There are many places in the US that I really like, but, as in most places in the world some of the people leave a lot to be desired - especially those in power.

Quite a few years ago, I used to work closely with an American financier. He had lived in Paris, Athens, Piraeous and later on, London. A Harvard classics scholar he was a typical New Englander and Bostonian. Over coffee one day I asked him why hed had left the USA originally. "Well, XXXX," he said, " There are far too many Americans!" Sums it all up for me!

Most intelligent Americans despair over the innate stupidity of the 'average' American. I find it extremely difficult to find any intelligent Americans though! We will be having dinner with one of my favourites three weeks tomorrow, he's a retired rocket scientist partly responsible for setting up Cape Canaveral. Fascinating to talk to, very erudite, very interesting stories. He also is none too impressed with his country's leaders - any of them.
